Harrison Birtwistle's chaotic and dissonant opera takes Punch and Judy to a monumental and almost ritualistic place. With this conceptual design, I wanted to capture the arcane and bizarre world of the piece while keeping clear references the key elements of the Punch and Judy puppet show. The large sundial references the key change of time and season in each section of the opera, and would turn each time. The tall striped tower on stage left would be the cperch for the character of the conductor/pupeteer, Choregos.
