Donizetti's opera is a romanticisation of the life and death of the real Anne Boleyn. For the design, I wanted to avoid falling into cliche Tudor imagery, and instead chose to abstract the ceiling from Hampton Court Palace to create a beautiful cage for the doomed queen. For the costume design, I decided to dress the cast in contemporary Hollywood glamour to emphasise their position of celebrity.
